The (un)Happy Planet Index 2.0
The new economics foundation (a British think tank) has issued its second report on an index that ranks nations on the basis of the Happy Planet Index, which is calculated as:  
 
HPI ≈ (Life expectancy x Life satisfaction) / Ecological footprint  
 
It’s an interesting idea.  Is it convincing?  Consider the results: the nations at the top of the list are from Central America and the Caribbean (plus Colombia); those at the bottom are the US, most of sub-Saharan Africa, Iraq, Cambodia, Macedonia, the United Arab Emirates, and Haiti.

A number of observers have been deeply critical of this practice, in which corporations draft potential articles for scientific journals (often with a tilt favoring the company’s products) and then circulate them to faculty to see if they would be willing to sign on as an author.
